For Normandale alumnus Filip Vukasin, success didn’t happen by chance. It was built through persistence, purpose, and the willingness to embrace opportunity when it appeared.
After earning his associate degree from Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minnesota, Filip began searching for an affordable and reputable community college in the Twin Cities that offered a strong Exercise Science program. He initially considered another institution, but when the program he was interested in was discontinued, what felt like a setback became a turning point. That unexpected change ultimately led him to Normandale Community
College, a decision that would shape both his education and his career.
“I couldn’t have been happier to come across Normandale,” Filip recalls.
Once enrolled in the Exercise Science program at Normandale, Filip quickly immersed himself in campus life. He secured a work-study position in the Admissions Office, giving him the opportunity to connect with students while strengthening his own academic foundation. Through his coursework and campus involvement, he built meaningful relationships, gained hands-on professional experience, and developed the confidence that would carry him forward.
His path to a four-year degree was seamless thanks to the partnership between Normandale and Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). After completing his associate degree in Exercise Science, Filip transitioned directly into SMSU’s bachelor’s program in Exercise Science and Corporate Wellness. The continuation of his education provided both advanced knowledge and practical preparation for his future career. “That
gave me a complete platform and the tools to start working for Lifetime as a personal trainer right after graduation,” he explains.
At Lifetime in Eagan, Filip quickly established himself as a top-performing trainer. Drawing from his academic training at Normandale and SMSU, his background as a professional athlete, and the inspiration of his father, who owned a training business in Serbia, Filip began envisioning something even greater. In 2020, he launched his own personal training business. Since then, Filip has worked with over 250 people.
Looking back, Filip credits his journey to determination and discipline. “I can honestly say that dreams do come true,” he says. “But never stop believing. Persistence, patience, and discipline will get you where you want to be.” For Filip, Normandale was more than a stepping stone, it was transformative. Through supportive mentors and approachable faculty, he gained not only technical expertise but also confidence, humility, and a deeper
sense of purpose.”
“I’ve gained all the tools needed to be confident yet humble in my craft,” he shares. “Most importantly, I’ve learned to respect each person God has blessed me with by sending them my way to help them become healthier, more confident, and better versions of themselves.”
Today, his passion for helping others is evident in every aspect of his work. Filip encourages current and future students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them. “Don’t be shy to ask questions,” he advises. “From financial aid and scholarships to tutoring and your professors, Normandale is an amazing, diverse school
that truly wants to see its students succeed.” For Filip, that support made all the difference, turning an unexpected change in plans into the foundation of a thriving career and business.
